The way he's intrigued will probably lead him to be somewhat detached in sex, using fingers, toys, orders (he has a great command voice) instead of having sex with someone directly.

Canon: Death Note
What appearance/behavioral cues might Thrawn be able to pick up on?: Mello wears leather and has scarring (from burns) on most of the left side of his face. He carries himself with confidence and has a tendency to take up a lot of space when he is sitting down. From this, Thrawn can likely gather that what Mello lacks in size (because he is slender and could be seen as unassuming), he makes up for in attitude and clothing. He may be able to pick up on the fact that Mello has a little bit of an inferiority complex going on, too, after some interaction.
He wears rosary beads and a small cross-adorned bracelet in canon, both of which he will have in Ariel. Due to a couple of manga panels that show Mello in all his mafia glory with an altar (statue of Mary, crosses) in the background, I play him as somewhat religious — though it's more of a wanting to believe than an actual solid belief, if that makes sense. Given his morally gray leanings, he is not incredibly devout, but I imagine he does suffer a little Catholic angst. His rosary beads have sentimental value, and Thrawn is free to come to those conclusions too if you think he would, but Mello will not be happy about that.
I am totally okay with Thrawn coming to the conclusion that Mello may have (had) criminal dealings/affiliations/etc. I am also totally okay with him picking up on the fact that Mello's morals are a little skewed, etc. etc.
What are some ways that are especially effective in manipulating your character?: It'll be a little bit of a challenge to manipulate Mello. I hesitate to say impossible because he is human, but he has been trained to assess people/situations/etc. and is a skilled manipulator himself in canon (he managed to manipulate the mafia into doing his bidding, pretty much)...Threats won't work, stroking his ego won't work. I think the only way to really get him in that regard would be to use anything personal relating to his goal (catching one particular serial killer back home, being number one) or anything personal Thrawn can draw out. It'll likely take some build up and Mello will try to best Thrawn if he figures out that Thrawn is trying to manipulate him.
What is your character's taste in art, and what does that say about them?: Mello is used to living lightly so that he can move when he needs to. I honestly don't see him as decorating his apartment because his opinion will be that he is going to leave asap and therefore there's no point in decorating. This may change later, but for now just blank walls and no art...from which Thrawn can probably get the sense that Mello is pretty much ready to leave Ariel as soon as opportunity provides.
ETA I almost forgot this but he does have a gun that is cross-adorned and a bracelet that is also cross-adorned...so there's that!
Is there anything in particular you want him to figure out?: Nothing in particular but I'd be excited to have him and Mello interact since it sounds like Thrawn can offer Mello a challenge (and maybe even best him!).
